How To Fix Blinds That Don T Open
Blinds are not only a functional addition to your house but also give a facelift to the décor of the interiors by making the windows and doors in your house stand out. Blinds improve heat insulation and light-filtration which otherwise is handled rather poorly by barren glass windows. Blinds also help enhance the efficiency of the air conditioner or heater installed in your house. A comfortable atmosphere inside the house during both the summers and the winters surely makes the blinds a worthwhile investment.
What are Venetian Blinds?
Venetian blinds are one of the most popular types of blinds and also a proven classic. These blinds date back to the 18th century. Contrary to the assumption of them having originated in Venice, the Venetian blinds were actually invented by the Persians. The original design that comprised of many wooden slats stacked one after the other while leaving some gap between individual slats is still the most common design for various types of blinds.
The Venetian blinds have a minimalistic and elegant appeal which provides the perfect edge to the décor of the interiors. Ideal for both homes and offices, Venetian blinds are easy to maintain and operate. If you are not sure about which blinds to select for your place, Venetian blinds are a safe option.
What To Do If Your Venetian Blinds Don't Work Smoothly?
Venetian blinds are great window treatment options but just like other window coverings, these can also develop some issues with time and prolonged usage. Issues such as the Venetian blinds not opening or not closing, blinds not tilting properly, etc. are pretty common. However, you don't need to worry as more often than not, these issues are easy to fix and can be done on your own. But before you rush to fix the issue yourself, you need to consider some important factors.
If your blinds are covered under brand warranty, you should not indulge your DIY zeal as that can void the warranty. Instead, contact the customer care team of the respective brand and they will handle the rest. If the blinds are out of warranty, in that case, fixing the blinds yourself will be a great idea. It will save you some precious time and also the money.
How to Fix Venetian Blinds That Won't Open
Venetian blinds not opening is not so unheard of and can be related to an issue with the operating mechanism. But before you set out to fix it, you should also check a few other things which can also be a cause of the issue. Let us look at the things you should check first:
• Misalignment of the Venetian blinds: Sometimes it may happen that the blinds themselves get misaligned if there is some issue with the mounting bracket or the headrail is not fit snuggly on them. This misalignment can prevent the blinds from opening or closing properly as the individual slats get disoriented. So, you should see if the blinds are aligned properly or not whenever you face the issue of blinds not opening.
• Clogging up of the operational mechanism: Sometimes the operational mechanism gets clogged up due to dust accumulation or any piece of debris. In such cases, the blind slats don't tilt properly and you may face the issue of blinds not opening. You can just remove the dust or any blockage of the operational mechanism and try opening and closing the blinds. If the blinds start working properly, then you are good to go.
If after checking for both the above-mentioned issues, the Venetian blinds still don't open, then you can follow the following steps to solve the issue with the operational mechanism:
• Step 1: Try lifting the slats as high as the headrail. This will remove the weight of the slats from the headrail and the mounting mechanism.
• Step 2: Pull the blind cord and check if it moves freely. If the cord is locked, removing the weight of the slats should release the cord lock.
• Step 3: Then put the blind slats down again and try opening and closing the blinds.
• Step 4: If the issue still persists, then the issue may be with the locking mechanism. Locate the locking mechanism. You will find it inside the headrail.
• Step 5: On the locking mechanism, you will find a component that can be adjusted using a flathead screwdriver.
• Step 6: Softy push that component with the screwdriver. Doing this will disengage the lock and the blinds will get closed. Make sure that you allow the blinds to lower slowly by taking the weight on yourself. If you allow the blinds to lower at once, the sudden downward pull will increase the pressure on the mounting mechanism and may cause some damage to it.
• Step 7: Lubricate the locking mechanism thoroughly.
• Step 8: Try opening and closing the blinds by pulling the cord. Repeat this process several times until you are satisfied that the blinds are operating smoothly.
• Step 9: If the issue still does not get fixed then maybe the locking mechanism is faulty and requires replacing. You don't need to worry as this component is relatively inexpensive and you will be able to fix the problem without burning a hole in your pocket.
You can clearly see that most of the problems related to the operation of the blinds can be fixed easily at home with the help of some basic tools such as a screwdriver. If any component turns out to be faulty, you can replace them without spending too much. This is what makes it even more economical to fix your blinds yourself. You don't always need to pay professionals every time some issue comes up with the Venetian blinds installed inside your home. As long as the blinds are not extensively damaged, repairing the blinds by yourself is not a bad option at all.
